didn't take this shot, but I vividly remember that winter of 1948. There was so much snow, you didn't dig a path from your front door, you dug a tunnel. This shot was taken with a Kodak Brownie box camera by my wife's brother, Lem, on their farm in the Berkshire Hills in Western Massachusetts. This being a family poultry farm with 10,000 chickens that absolutely had to be fed and watered and the eggs picked, even this amount of snow couldn't halt operations.

I recall that shot vey well. I don't know how you got that photo. Those were the good old days when winters were hard and long and the men were strong and hardy.
You probaly know that the winter of 1943-44 was one where the drifts came over the telephone wires and blocked us from getting out for a week without electric power until a state diesel snowthrower came to unblock the corks on West road directly north and south of our house.. That was so scary that the following year when Ed was born (Feb '45), Ma went to the hospital a week early because of the fear of being socked in again. Ask Mairi what she remembers about this.

This is what snow used to look like where we live now!! We're lucky if we get a couple of feet of snow in any winter lately! Global warming. Now that's what I call SNOW!!

I saw this and it took my breath away. This was on Flickr and I couldn't get over how beautiful it was! I miss seeing butterflies like this up here. We don't have any of the bigger ones for some strange reason. It didn't used to be that way here! There used to be the bigger butterflies, I can't figure out what's keeping them away from here!

He/she looks healthy, too! I think it belongs to the horse farm behind the doctor's office. All the birds were upset that this kitty was there and were making quite a fuss! LOL! I was able to get a few good shots of the birds, too!

I took this photo when I was in Williamstown last week. It's so beautiful over there and I love this horsefarm! That particular day, it was breezy and cool, a nice front had come through, but unfortunately that day only lasted once, then the heatwave came back in earnest!!

it's not very clear anymore, sounds muffled, not sure why! You can hear Walter Cronkite and Wally Schirra talking! I had
to laugh when Walter Cronkite said, "The building's shaking!!!" I imagine it was! Today marks 41 years since that day, I can't believe it's been 41 years! It just seems like yesterday!! Where has time gone???!!

heavens!!! "The building's shaking" shouted Walter Crokite. I will never forget this as long as I live, what a wonderful time to live in America!! Man on the way to the moon. When will we go back there, I echo this from my favorite Astronaut James Lovell! What a wonderful time to be an American! God bless America, and may we never lose this wonderful vision!!

Memories of my old home town, Augusta, GA in the late 1950s and early 1960s

Those were fantastic days! My sister was a teenager in the late 1950s in Augusta, (actually in 1959 she was 10 and I was 5) and me being 5 years younger, I would tag along with her on some dates ( I think my mother made her do it, lol!!).
I remember the Butts Memorial bridge over the Augusta canal where you would beg your parents to gun the car engine as you went over it for a second of weightlessness! lol I loved that bridge when I was a kid and then later for its gorgeous decorations. It was dedicated to (I think his title was General) Archibald Butts, who died on the Titanic. We went to Allen park to watch the baseball games and crossed that footbridge over the Augusta Canal, and the Pepsi Cola plant was across the canal from the baseball field. I think back then our team was called the Augusta Lions??? Not sure. Lot of history in Augusta and still is. Have you seen Augusta, in the last 20 years or so?? It's really coming into its own. Trees shade Broad street and the River Walk is soooo beautiful! with all the gorgeous fountains and the restored Cotton Exchange building! If you haven't gone in last 20 years, you should go for a short visit like at Christmas, they have it soooo beautiful at Christmas with a giant Christmas tree on top of the River Walk. Mayor DeVaney was the last mayor I remember before we moved up here and he really did a fantastic job with restoring downtown Augusta! Unfortunately I heard he was killed in a car accident just a few years ago and he was still so young. Awful! Oh yes! Do you remember the #1 drive in on highway one I think that's where WBBQ used to be!! I remember going with my sister and her "social" dance partner there to get a milkshake and you could go up there and fill out a request card for a song you wanted to hear them play! Oh yes, Augusta was a fantastic town in the 1950s and early 60s for kids. You had Woolworths, Kresses, H.L. Green's, all those neat stores that we all liked along with Sears, JC Penney, JB Whites, (a big fave among teens), Cullums, (too expensive for us, lol,) Florshiem shoes, lets see, oh yea and the S&S cafeteria!! I LOVED that place!! and the food was soooo yummy! My parents would take us there for awhile almost every Sunday after church! Since I was about 5 years old in 1959, that would have made my sister 10 years old then. I loved going to Woolworths, and Kresses and H.L. Greens because they had the neatest things there for kids!! Including those fun photo booths where you could make the silliest faces and then laugh at them later!! The wonderful 5 & 10 cent stores! Many wonderful memories of those places! Don't forget beautiful Lombard's Pond on Highway 25. Where every kid went on a hot summer day for a day of a lot of swimming and fun! Oh I miss those places, but we can always return to them in our minds! I remember when Tobacco Road and Windsor Springs road were just and intersection of two-two lane blacktops and nothing but woods out there, it was considered way out in "the sticks". It was where every parent took their teenager to practice driving since there wasn't hardly any traffic out there at all. Not so now! lol. Too bad urban sprawl has ruined all these wonderful places. Like my daddy (God rest his soul) always said: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" In other words, if it's nice the way it is, just leave it that way, darn it!! Oh well, that part of Augusta, Georgia will live on in the memories and photos of the baby boomers that lived in Augusta, Georgia in the 1950s, 1960s, and the early 1970s. It was still a very nice place to live in Richmond County back then!!
