Children of Chernobyl - 49min. documentary

Sad but true. And we want to build MORE nuclear power plants here in the United States. I guess we didn't learn from Russia's accident! We have too many leaking nuclear power plants already here in the United States. And people want to find a cure for cancer. Please start with shutting down all nuclear power plants!! Do it for your children and your children's children!!

Chernobyl's Children - Belarus

Victims of Radiation

This is very graphic, but I hope you will realize how dangerous nuclear power is. Am I the only one that feels this way??!

Dr. Ernest Sternglass speaks on the bad effects of radiation

Please listen to this man, he knows what he is talking about!

Why Nuclear Power Plants are a bad idea Pt.1

For those who think their lives are safe and their own country not affected by "cheap" nuclear power, here is an excellent article by Professor J. Sternglass: www.ratical.org/radiation/inetSeries/ejs 1192.html

Here is a brief summary of what happened at Chernovyl:
On April 26, 1986, the fourth reactor of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, exploded at 01:23 AM local time. The workers were performing an experiment with the reactor's safety systems. Problems occurred during the tests, the reactor did not receive enough coolant, had built up too much heat in the core and had fully withdrawn control rods, all of which contributed to a very unstable and unpredictable reactor operation. When the control rods were reinserted in an attempt to regain control of the unstable reactor, there was a sudden increase in reactivity, caused by the design of the RBMK reactor and its control rods, and an uncontrollable runaway reaction occurred. The reactor produced tremendous amounts of steam, eventually causing a steam break/explosion, which destroyed part of the reactor. After the explosion, graphite fires broke out, due to the high temperatures of the reactor and the graphite's exposure to oxygen. Radioactive debris was flung several miles, and smoke containing radioactive contaminants from the burning graphite traveled as far as Belarus.
All residents were evacuated.

Chernobyl death toll grossly underestimated
18 April 2006

Chernobyl, Ukraine — A new report has revealed that the full consequences of the Chernobyl disaster could top a quarter of a million cancer cases and nearly 100,000 fatal cancers.
Our report involved 52 respected scientists and includes information never before published in English. It challenges the UN International Atomic Energy Agency Chernobyl Forum report, which predicted 4,000 additional deaths attributable to the accident as a gross simplification of the real breadth of human suffering.

The new data, based on Belarus national cancer statistics, predicts approximately 270,000 cancers and 93,000 fatal cancer cases caused by Chernobyl. The report also concludes that on the basis of demographic data, during the last 15 years, 60,000 people have additionally died in Russia because of the Chernobyl accident, and estimates of the total death toll for the Ukraine and Belarus could reach another 140,000.

The report also looks into the ongoing health impacts of Chernobyl and concludes that radiation from the disaster has had a devastating effect on survivors; damaging immune and endocrine systems, leading to accelerated ageing, cardiovascular and blood illnesses, psychological illnesses, chromosomal aberrations and an increase in foetal deformations.

Sometimes it's too cold and windy to go outside! I can't remember if I took this through the kitchen window or on the back porch! The Chickadees are easier to capture, even though they're fast, they're not that afraid of humans and will sometimes stay at the feeder even though I'm standing on the porch taking photos of them. The real challenge is getting the Blue Jays and Downy Woodpeckers. Also occasional Cardinals stop by, but my friend, Esther up the road pretty much gets all of them in her yard!! I will have to go visit her and get some photos from her feeders. She has all kinds of birds coming to hers!! She has a lot of evergreen trees and bushes growing around her house which they feel safer being around there. Right below this feeder
is our Christmas tree. I always put it outside as cover for the birds since we don't have
any tall ones around YET. I'm working on getting some growing. I have a puny Holly bush and Ligustrum or Privet growing next to the privacy fence but they're growing sooo
slow! I think it's because of all the rocks in the ground plus I have to feed them and acidic fertilizer because the soil is too alkaline. Hopefully before long I will have a hedge of evergreens around so that the birds will feel safer and more varieties of birds will come around in the winter! I have a great variety in the summer when the trees are leafed out.

This is actually the first part of Backwards which of course I got

There's a little bit of rough language in here but not really
that bad. But if some fowl words from time to time insult you, then don't watch it, but if you love humor with just a hint of a few fowl words, you will LOVE this!!

Red Dwarf III,Episode 1-Backwards(Bar Room Tidy)

Now for a change of pace. This is hilarious!! David and I used to watch Red Dwarf on PBS in Georgia. It's a brit com. This is about a bunch of guys stuck in space. This episode, however, they land on a planet that's all backwards and everybody does EVERYTHING BACKWARDS!! It's soo funny! It's my favorite episode of all! The tall skinny black guy is supposed to be a cat that was turned into a humanoid by some kind of "space accident" can't remember what it was, right now. I loved this show!! I hated it when it ws cancelled. Enjoy!

This is Pat Davis (Hughes) and her brother Sam or as his parents and everybody
called him "Sambo". That was his nickname. This was Easter 1962 a year before the photo below. Behind them is a huge Gardenia bush and I always remember when I would come to Pat's house to play, around May or June, that Gardenia bush would have almost hundreds of blooms on them and they smelled soooo good!! That's why I love Gardenias to this day. Pat and Sam's parents owned a 1957 fin tail Chevrolet!! I remember many a time when the weather was rainy or icy, their mom taking us to school in it, otherwise, we would all walk to school together! We had crossing guards and we knew them by name. I remember we had Mrs. Mitchell, she lived also in our neighborhood. I can't remember the other one. We went to Wheeles Road School on(of course Wheeles Road). Our Principal was Mr. Bernie Ward who is now deceased. Those were fun times. I remember when we would walk to school, we would go to Kernaghan's Corner or Korner, a gas station/grocery store and buy candy before we had to be in school in the mornings. Because of the traffic around that corner,( it was next to Hwy. #1,) it was really dangerous for us kids to be going down there even back in those days (now it would be about 4 times worse). So Mr. Ward made an announcement one day that we couldn't go down there anymore! Darn it! We were so mad at him, but we got over it and we still loved him. He was a good man. And so were all the teachers, and darned good teachers at that. And that was back in the day
when paddling kids for misbehaving was the norm. It didn't "scar us for life" as so many whiny people say nowadays, it just kept us on the straight and narrow. And we were happy!
Unfortunately, Sam or Sambo died of heart problems while traveling in Germany
just a few years ago, he was just a year or two older than me. Pat was 8 here she would be 9 in October. I can't remember when Sam's birthday was, I think it was in the summer. He was such an intelligent boy with so much potential. He was working for the government in Washington, DC at the time he passed away. He was a faithful Boy Scout who made it to Eagle scout. Had a room full of "Mad Magazines" which Pat and I would sneak in his room while he was at school since us younger ones got out earlier than the older ones. LOL! He had them stacked about 1 ft high all the way around the walls of his room!!! Wow can you imagine that collection?? from the the 1950s and early 1960s??!! Wow! We LOVED Mad Magazine. Also Sam was a fan of the Mickey Mouse club when he was younger, loved doing "magic tricks" and in the "bomb shelters" that we all had to dig under our home basements, they ended up( thank God)
not having to be used for that and I remember at one of Sams birthday parties he invited all the kids to the basement shelter and there was a "stage" in there and he performed magic tricks!! Wow. Back then, we kids knew how to use our imaginations. Little did we know of all the dangers around us. Our parents were tightlipped about the Cold War to an extent until we were older. But I will never forget everybody talking about "Sputnik" that the Russians had shot into space and we would look at it in the evenings and the poor little dog stuck in that Satellite I think his or her name was Leika. I cried because I said to my parents, "How is he going to get back home? They were honest and told me the dog died. :-( I hated that, why couldn't they at least put a rat or guinea pig?? Why a dog??!! It made me mad. I couldn't have been but 4 or 5 years old at the time!
Well, I could write a book and I probably will about my life growing up in East Central Georgia in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s all the way to 2001. That's the year we moved up here. And then in September of that year, once again, the world would never be the same.

LOL!! We all look so funny! My hair looked like a poodle's! LOL! That's me on the left
Mary Huntley (Yarbrough), and Pat Davis (Hughes). Sometimes I swear we were like the 3 female stooges! LOL! Living down south in Georgia, with the high humidity, curly
hair was a curse! You can see how short my bangs were (probably cut that day and on
the sides my hair sticks out like a stuffed dog's ears! LOL!! Mary, with the infamous 8 ball. We had soo much fun with that. Pat's holding some unusual party favors my mother got from the dimestore. They were made all of wood (probably Balsa) and you would squeeze the bottom two sticks the the little guy on the trapeze (hard to see) would flip over! To this day, Pat or Tricia as she likes to be called now, will still mention those! I had almost forgot about them until she mentioned them about a year ago! What's really funny is that the 8 ball is still selling strong in the toy departments, brings back so many hilarious memories! Those little trapeze thingies I think are still sold
at that catalog you can get, Oriental Trading, I think but they're not made as good as they were back then and I think they're plastic, now. I wonder what happened to the ones we had? Maybe Pat took them with her! LOL! She might even have them to this very day since she mentioned them. I know they WERE party favors so there were 3 of them, here she's holding two, I guess Mary's and hers, as usual who knows where I put mine, little miss scatterbrained! LOL! Behind us was an antique dresser that my dear mother restored. The trim was pink and the drawers themselves were white with thin gold trim.
I LOVED it!! On top of the dresser I can see some things and remember others. I had a cheap bottle of Cologne I got at a family Christmas reunion. I still remember the name of it, Cara Nome??? Does anybody remember that? Probably you could get it at Woolworth's for 50 cents! LOL! It was in a yellow bottle and it smelled good at first but since I didn't wear cologne that much at the age of 10 (I was too much of a tomgirl!) it
got stale and one day I opened it and nearly passed out! LOL! It was sooo strong! Arrgggh! But I kept it on my dresser anyway because it was "colorful". LOL! I had a plastic Indian Teepee that the lady up the street gave me. She would donate to an Indian Reservation and they would send her those cute things. I also had a beautiful plastic papoose that they had sent her also. It was blue (the blanket) and the back was brown with a baby's head peeking out it had a place on the back where you could hang it on the wall if you wanted but I liked it on my dresser. My desk was behind Pat and it also was the same color as the dresser and was also antique. It sat next to a window with a Carolina Cherry tree next to it and I would watch the birds come and go and never was able to finish my homework!! (ahem!) lol In the spring, the wonderful fresh smell of the spring rains, gurgling in the gutters and downspouts was like a lullaby! And I remember sitting at that desk on a cool April evening which was a "rainy night in Georgia" that night and hearing the spring peepers and toads singing their hearts out.
I was working on my 7th grade deadline for my Georgia Scrapbook that we had to turn in the next day!! (As usual I would put it off to the last minute!). God I loved my childhood home and neighborhood, but little did I realize the dangers lurking just 20 to 30 miles away from us. It was called the "Bomb plant" back then. Later it was called DuPont and last time I heard it was called SRS or the Savannah River site. It was leaking radioactive tritium into our air and water!! Mary's mother sadly died of leukemia shortly after this photo was taken, Mary was the same age as me. Pat's mother died a couple of years ago from pancreatic cancer and me? My thyroid doesn't function anymore and I have to take synthetic thyroid hormones. That's what nuclear plants do to humans, so i know first hand how bad it is. I remember when we would get a rare snowfall in Georgia we wanted to eat the snow and our parents would warn us "don't eat the snow, it's radioactive". When I think back on these days, because of such loving parents we had a happy childhood, but we didn't know of the horrible dangers of living there. So sad.
But I thank God, I have made it this far and both my friends. My mother died of breast cancer and there were numerous other people in the neighborhood that died of all kinds of cancers. Well I hope we have learned not to build anymore Nuclear anything, but you know how big money talks. I just got finished watching "Silkwood" and I had to cry. I almost feel like I need to take up where she left off, but at what price to my life? Who knows. Pray for me.

EAGLE BUTTE, S.D. – Sonny Brave Eagle and his family spent six days in the dark without a phone or working radio before law officers found them in their home after a fierce winter storm cut power across South Dakota's impoverished Cheyenne River Indian Reservation.

"We didn't know what was going on," said Brave Eagle, among hundreds of people on the sprawling reservation amid a second week without electricity as utility workers struggle to make repairs. The storm brought down power lines, iced roads and led to water outages.

Tribal Chairman Joseph Brings Plenty estimated that 1,500 to 1,700 homes were still without power Monday, and said it would take "better than three weeks" to get the reservation up and running again.

The tribe has spent "enormous amounts" of money on such needs as fuel and water, and an emergency fund that had $175,000 a few months ago has been drained, said tribal spokeswoman Natalie Stites.

For now, Brave Eagle, his wife and their two young daughters stay at an emergency shelter or a relative's house with four other families. They didn't have a vehicle or even batteries to power a radio when the lights went out at their house, about 12 miles north of Eagle Butte in north-central South Dakota, after a powerful ice storm hit Jan. 20.

Ice coated roads and electrical lines, and forced shops and schools to close. Then before residents could recover, a blizzard tore through the Dakotas with wind gusts between 25 and 50 mph.

The frozen ground complicated efforts to replace power poles, and snow had to be cleared away to allow utility crews to get close enough to rebuild transmission lines, said Brings Plenty.

The power outage led to equipment malfunctions at a pumping plant in a pipeline system that provides drinking water to the reservation. Water service and pressure must be restored gradually in an old system with weak pipes, the tribal chairman added.

About 8,000 people live on the reservation, which is larger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined, and the outages affected everyone, Stites said.

But the reservation faced difficulties well before the storms. The unemployment rate is 80 percent, tribal leaders say. More than half of Ziebach County and 38 percent of Dewey County lived in poverty in 2005, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The reservation spans both counties.

Several shelters and distribution centers were set up around the reservation. At the height of the outages, about 14,000 people in the region were without water — most of them at Cheyenne River.

The number of water outages had declined Monday, with about 100 people still affected, said Tri County Mni Waste Water System general manager Leo Fischer.

The South Dakota National Guard helped bring in generators from the state. The tribe distributed fuels such as propane, delivered donated bottled water and sent bulk water tanks around the reservation.

Brings Plenty said no deaths had been reported, but a few people became sick from carbon monoxide fumes given off by makeshift heating sources.

"We could have had quite a few people perish in this," he said.

Seventeen dialysis patients were moved to a hotel at the Prairie Winds Casino in southwest South Dakota, said Rick Shangreaux, the casino's acting general manager. The patients are being treated at a facility on the Pine Ridge Reservation, where the casino is located.

By DAVE GRAM, Associated Press Writer Dave Gram, Associated Press Writer – Mon Feb 1, 9:49 pm ET
MONTPELIER, Vt. – Radioactive tritium, a carcinogen discovered in potentially dangerous levels in groundwater at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant, has now tainted at least 27 of the nation's 104 nuclear reactors — raising concerns about how it is escaping from the aging nuclear plants.

The leaks — many from deteriorating underground pipes — come as the nuclear industry is seeking and obtaining federal license renewals, casting itself as a clean-green alternative to power plants that burn fossil fuels.

Tritium, found in nature in tiny amounts and a product of nuclear fission, has been linked to cancer if ingested, inhaled or absorbed through the skin in large amounts.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Monday that new tests at a monitoring well on Vermont Yankee's site in Vernon registered 70,500 picocuries per liter, more than three times the federal safety standard of 20,000 picocuries per liter.

That is the highest reading yet at the Vermont Yankee plant, where the original discovery last month drew sharp criticism by Gov. Jim Douglas and others. Officials of the New Orleans-based Entergy Corp., which owns the plant in Vernon in Vermont's southeast corner, have admitted misleading state regulators and lawmakers by saying the plant did not have the kind of underground pipes that could leak tritium into groundwater.

"What has happened at Vermont Yankee is a breach of trust that cannot be tolerated," said Douglas, who until now has been a strong supporter of the state's lone nuclear plant.

Vermont Yankee has said no tritium has been found in area drinking water supplies or in the Connecticut River and that earlier, lesser tritium levels discovered last month were of no health concern.

"The existence of tritium in such low levels does not present a risk to public health or safety whatsoever," plant spokesman Robert Williams said in an e-mail Monday.

President Barack Obama, in his State of the Union address last week, called for "building a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country." His 2011 budget request to Congress on Monday called for $54 billion in additional loan guarantees for nuclear power.

The 104 nuclear reactors operating in 31 states provide only 20 percent of the nation's electricity. But they are responsible for 70 percent of the power from non-greenhouse gas producing sources, including wind, solar and hydroelectric dams.

Vermont Yankee is just the latest of dozens of U.S. nuclear plants, many built in the 1960s and '70s, to be found with leaking tritium.

The Braidwood nuclear station in Illinois was found in the 1990s to be leaking millions of gallons of tritium-laced water, some of which contaminated residential water wells. Plant owner Exelon Corp. ended up paying for a new municipal water system.

After Braidwood, the nuclear industry stepped up voluntary checking for tritium in groundwater at plants around the country, testing that revealed the Vermont Yankee problem, plant officials said.

In New Jersey last year, tritium was reported leaking a second time from the Oyster Creek plant in Ocean County, just days after Exelon won NRC approval for a 20-year license extension there. The Pilgrim plant in Plymouth, Mass., like Vermont Yankee, owned by Entergy, reported low levels of tritium on the ground in 2007. The Vermont leak has prompted a Plymouth-area citizens group to demand more test wells at the Massachusetts plant.

NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan says leaks have occurred at least 27 of the nation's 104 commercial reactors at 65 plant sites. He said the list likely does not include every plant where tritium has leaked.

The leaks have several causes; underground pipes corroding and the leaking of spent fuel storage pools are the most common. The source of the leak or leaks at Vermont Yankee has not been found; at Oyster Creek, corroded underground pipes were implicated.

Many radiological health scientists agree with the Environmental Protection Agency that tritium, like other radioactive isotopes, can cause cancer.

That worries Vermont public officials and lawmakers. Rep. Tony Klein, chairman of the Natural Resources and Energy Committee in the Vermont House, said he fears public officials may be downplaying the risk.

"When you have public officials that the public depends on for their health and welfare making casual statements that a radioactive substance is not harmful to you, I think that's ludicrous," Klein said.

There's disagreement on the severity of the risk.

"Somebody would have to be drinking a lot of water and it would have to be really concentrated in there for it to do any harm at all," said Jacqueline Williams, a radiation biologist at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York state.

But in 2005, the National Academy of Sciences concluded after an exhaustive study that even the tiniest amount of ionizing radiation increases the risk of cancer.

"The scientific research base shows that there is no threshold of exposure below which low levels of ionizing radiation can be demonstrated to be harmless or beneficial," Richard R. Monson, associate dean for professional education and professor of epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, said when the NAS released its study.

Paul Gunter of the Maryland-based anti-nuclear group Beyond Nuclear, said in many instances, it's impossible to know how much tritium is getting into the environment.

"These are uncontrolled, unmonitored releases from these plants," he said.

Steve Kerekes, spokesman for the Nuclear Energy Institute, an industry group, said the public shouldn't be unduly worried.

"These are industrial facilities, and any industrial facility from time to time is going to have equipment problems or challenges," Kerekes said. "Not every operational issue rises to the level of being a safety issue."

Vermont, with a strong anti-nuclear movement, is the only state in the country where the Legislature decides whether to relicense a nuclear plant. Vermont Yankee's current 40-year license is up in 2012, and Entergy is asking for 20 more years.

(This version CORRECTS third paragraph to say tritium is a product of nuclear fission, not nuclear fusion.)

THIS IS JUST WHAT WE TRIED TO MOVE AWAY FROM IN AUGUSTA, GA AND AIKEN, SC!!! WE GREW UP IN THIS AREA AND ALTHOUGH I HAD A HAPPY CHILDHOOD, PEOPLE AROUND US WERE DROPPING LIKE FLIES FROM CANCER!! TRITIUM WAS FOUND IN THE WELLS FROM AIKEN, SC SW TO WAYNESBORO, GA FURTHER SW TO ALABAMA!! IT HAS CONTAMINATED THE TUSCALOOSCA AQUIFER WHICH RUNS FROM SC SOUTHWESTWARD TO ALABAMA!! THAT'S TWO STATES THAT HAVE TRITIUM IN THEIR WATER SUPPLY!!! (Actually 3 counting SC) AND PEOPLE WONDER WHY THERE'S A RISE IN ALL KINDS OF CANCERS??DUH!! LET'S ALL FIGHT THIS, PLEASE, DO NOT ALLOW THE NRC TO RENEW THEIR LICENSE. I HAVE NO THYROID HORMONE IN MY BODY. WHY? THE FIRST THING RADIATION AFFECTS IS THE THYROID GLAND WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ALL BODILY FUNCTIONS INCLUDING THE HEART, BRAIN, THOUGHT PROCESSES, ETC. I HAVE TO TAKE SYNTHETIC THYROID HORMONE FOR POSSIBLY THE REST OF MY LIFE BECAUSE OF THESE BOZOS!!
AND HOW MANY AQUIFERS IN NEW ENGLAND HAVE BEEN AFFECTED?? PERHAPS THE WATER WE'RE DRINKING HERE IS ALREADY CONTAMINATED. I HAVE TO ADMIT IT'S THE BEST TASTING WATER, BUT THAT IS LITTLE COMFORT IF IT ALREADY HAS TRITIUM IN IT!! THAT FAIRY TALE I HEARD ABOUT BUCOLIC NEW ENGLAND AND HOW CONCERNED THEY WERE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT IS JUST THAT!! A BIG LIE. NEW ENGLAND IS NO BETTER OFF THAN SC, GEORGIA, AND ALABAMA AND GOD KNOWS HOW MANY OTHER AQUIFERS IN THE UNITED STATES AND OVERSEAS!! CANCER IS A MODERN DAY MAN-MADE DISEASE WHICH WE CAN CURE BY SHUTTING DOWN THESE (PARDON MY LANGUAGE) DAMNED NUCLEAR PLANTS. PLEASE JOIN ME IN CONTACTING YOUR CONGRESS PERSON AND TELLING THEM NOT TO LET THE NRC RENEW THEIR LICENSE!! THESE PLANTS ARE AGING DINOSAURS FROM THE COLD WAR. WE NOW CAN HARNESS SOLAR AND WIND POWER, WE HAVE NO NEED FOR THEM ANYMORE. PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T LET CONGRESS RENEW THEIR LICENSE!!! FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR HEALTH, YOUR CHILDREN, YOUR PARENTS, YOUR GRANDPARENTS. NO MORE DEATHS FROM CANCER!! THESE PLANTS ARE CREATING IT. WE CAN STOP IT!! THANK YOU FOR READING THIS.

About Me

My photo
I can be very social, but then a recluse. I like my privacy when I'm working in my flower garden. I like to meditate there with God and the birds and the flowers. I love animals, all God's creatures and I can't stand people that abuse them! I strongly urge anyone that wants a pet to adopt from your local animal shelter. There are many loving animals that are at shelters waiting for a loving home. You can find me most of the time on Flickr where I have a photostream!
