Memories of my old home town, Augusta, GA in the late 1950s and early 1960s

Those were fantastic days! My sister was a teenager in the late 1950s in Augusta, (actually in 1959 she was 10 and I was 5) and me being 5 years younger, I would tag along with her on some dates ( I think my mother made her do it, lol!!).
I remember the Butts Memorial bridge over the Augusta canal where you would beg your parents to gun the car engine as you went over it for a second of weightlessness! lol I loved that bridge when I was a kid and then later for its gorgeous decorations. It was dedicated to (I think his title was General) Archibald Butts, who died on the Titanic. We went to Allen park to watch the baseball games and crossed that footbridge over the Augusta Canal, and the Pepsi Cola plant was across the canal from the baseball field. I think back then our team was called the Augusta Lions??? Not sure. Lot of history in Augusta and still is. Have you seen Augusta, in the last 20 years or so?? It's really coming into its own. Trees shade Broad street and the River Walk is soooo beautiful! with all the gorgeous fountains and the restored Cotton Exchange building! If you haven't gone in last 20 years, you should go for a short visit like at Christmas, they have it soooo beautiful at Christmas with a giant Christmas tree on top of the River Walk. Mayor DeVaney was the last mayor I remember before we moved up here and he really did a fantastic job with restoring downtown Augusta! Unfortunately I heard he was killed in a car accident just a few years ago and he was still so young. Awful! Oh yes! Do you remember the #1 drive in on highway one I think that's where WBBQ used to be!! I remember going with my sister and her "social" dance partner there to get a milkshake and you could go up there and fill out a request card for a song you wanted to hear them play! Oh yes, Augusta was a fantastic town in the 1950s and early 60s for kids. You had Woolworths, Kresses, H.L. Green's, all those neat stores that we all liked along with Sears, JC Penney, JB Whites, (a big fave among teens), Cullums, (too expensive for us, lol,) Florshiem shoes, lets see, oh yea and the S&S cafeteria!! I LOVED that place!! and the food was soooo yummy! My parents would take us there for awhile almost every Sunday after church! Since I was about 5 years old in 1959, that would have made my sister 10 years old then. I loved going to Woolworths, and Kresses and H.L. Greens because they had the neatest things there for kids!! Including those fun photo booths where you could make the silliest faces and then laugh at them later!! The wonderful 5 & 10 cent stores! Many wonderful memories of those places! Don't forget beautiful Lombard's Pond on Highway 25. Where every kid went on a hot summer day for a day of a lot of swimming and fun! Oh I miss those places, but we can always return to them in our minds! I remember when Tobacco Road and Windsor Springs road were just and intersection of two-two lane blacktops and nothing but woods out there, it was considered way out in "the sticks". It was where every parent took their teenager to practice driving since there wasn't hardly any traffic out there at all. Not so now! lol. Too bad urban sprawl has ruined all these wonderful places. Like my daddy (God rest his soul) always said: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" In other words, if it's nice the way it is, just leave it that way, darn it!! Oh well, that part of Augusta, Georgia will live on in the memories and photos of the baby boomers that lived in Augusta, Georgia in the 1950s, 1960s, and the early 1970s. It was still a very nice place to live in Richmond County back then!!
It was fun walking down memory lane with you!!

  1. Misty Waters & Anderson Pools. Kellys hamburger ..Remember when we had glass pepsi & coke bottles that you could cash in at the grocery stores. James Browns home in Augusta was decorated with lights at Christmas. Do you remember before Augusta Tech was built there was a cabin in those woods. Nuns lived there.

About Me

My photo
I can be very social, but then a recluse. I like my privacy when I'm working in my flower garden. I like to meditate there with God and the birds and the flowers. I love animals, all God's creatures and I can't stand people that abuse them! I strongly urge anyone that wants a pet to adopt from your local animal shelter. There are many loving animals that are at shelters waiting for a loving home. You can find me most of the time on Flickr where I have a photostream!
